Launched in 2021 by the Identity Defined Security Alliance and the National Cybersecurity Alliance, Identity Management Day works to help spread awareness to business owners IT decision makers and the general public about the importance of identity management, with a special focus on the dangers of not securing identities and access credentials properly.

Did you know that Microsoft blocks 1.6 million automated bot account creation attempts per hour

Non-human identities now outnumber humans by 144:1, making this year’s Identity Management theme: Finding Identity: The search for you, me, and the machines especially relevant.

Identity management and credential management are imperative for everyone, but especially for small businesses, since they are often targeted by cybercriminals more often than larger organizations.

As we noted in our previous blog post, the dangers of insecure and lost credentials are becoming more prevalent, with attacks using previously compromised credentials recently over taking phishing as the top attack vector.

Identity Management tips for Small Business

  • Implement MFA for all business-related accounts and services
  • Utilize a password manager, to help employees create strong, unique passwords for every account and store them securely
  • Control access to sensitive data, ensuring users only have access to the information and files they need
  • Update your Acceptable Use Policy to include responsible use of AI tools, clearly noting what, if any company data and information can be used or shared
  • Ensure your staff takes annual cybersecurity training to help them better recognize current threats
  • Adopt a verification process for banking transfers, account changes and other critical transactions
